MARY WASHINGTON HOSPITAL: PRE-OP, INPATIENT SURGICAL, ENDOSCOPY, AND IV THERAPY SERVICES

Preadmission Testing
The Preadmission Testing Unit is responsible for screening patients for surgery and endoscopy procedures pre-entry to their hospital admission. The unit is staffed with RNs, HOC, Patient Access, and Lab. Our professional staff will ensure that any pre-registration diagnostic laboratory work is drawn, patients are educated on their condition, and if ordered, patients will be screened by anesthesia.

Same Day Surgery/Pre-Op Holding
This unit is responsible for preparing patients on the day of their surgery. Surgical outpatients and morning admissions will be processed; anesthesia will assess the patients; and nurses will complete their assessment, administer IVs, and complete final pre-op checklist prior to surgery. The unit is staffed by RNs, LPH, and HOC.

IV Therapy
This unit is responsible for IV access management throughout the hospital and is staffed by professionally trained RNs.

Endoscopy
Opened in February 2005, our Endoscopy Department resides in a 10,000 square-foot facility housing six pre-procedure bays, six procedure rooms, and fourteen recovery bays. Utilizing the latest and greatest in medical technology, we offer our services 24 hours a day to the people in our community - 90% of which are outpatients. We are proud to have a 95% patient satisfaction rate!

Orthopedic Unit
Our 30-bed Orthopedic Unit performs surgeries that include knee and hip joint replacements (over 500 last year), spinal surgeries, neuro overflow, as well as general orthopedic procedures. Our staff to patient ratio is 1:5 on day shift and 1:7 on the evening shift. We have garnered consistently high patient satisfaction scores. This is a unit experiencing significant growth potential. We are currently working on the implementation of a joint center that offers community outreach and teaching sessions. These will be conducted by a core group of nurses whose sole focus is total joint replacement patients in a group environment.

When you join us, you'll work in a team environment that emphasizes shift-to-shift reporting and patient care. Our nurses enjoy great rapport with our physicians, as well as mentoring by more experienced staff. There is significant passion for continuing education and training within the unit. Several of our nurses have just earned their certification in orthopedics and even more are scheduled for certification soon!
